Frequently Asked Questions

Gem X is a private social club for jewelry enthusiasts. It began from a desire to transform jewelry into social experiences for a new generation of jewelry lovers. Our mission is to seek the x factor – the magic of jewelry found in social experiences, storytelling and sharing. Read more about our beginnings here.

We comprise around 600 members from around the world, all with a vetted connection to and enthusiasm for jewelry. Many members hold gemology degrees, work at auction houses and museums, or design jewelry of our own. Every member is vetted as a true jewelry and gem enthusiast.  For a taste of our membership, you can read about our Core here.

Gem X looks for members who show a genuine enthusiasm for jewelry.  We carefully vet interest to ensure the best and most authentic experience for all our members. To be considered for an invitation to join Gem X, the applicant can fill out an online application here.  We will reach out to you to schedule an interview.

Most of our experiences, events and content are curated by our Core, who you can read about here. We are always on the lookout for new topics for our group. If you have an idea or are interested in collaborating, please contact us

We take turns curating jewelry experiences that will be of interest to our members. Typically, you will receive 2-3 invitations each month, ranging from online chats, to in-person talks, to excursions. Past events include private tours to workshops and lectures with The Met, the Frick Collection, the Cartier mansion, L’Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels, Sotheby’s, Christies, the Cooper Hewitt and the Museum of Art and Design. You can read more about past events here.

Our mission is to seek the jewelry x factor – the magic of jewelry found in social experiences, storytelling and sharing. We find and experience them in each other’s company. In addition to bringing members exclusive, jewelry-centric experiences, Gem X connects members with other inspiring jewelry enthusiasts, all with a vetted connection to the industry. These connections have sparked new jewelry opportunities for our members, like new business ideas, new professional collaborations and more.

Event size depends on the host and venue. Our events have ranged from intimate discussions to larger receptions and panels.

Gem X has physical chapters in New York City and London.  There are plans underway for a chapter in California as well, and we have a global presence with members from some 20 different countries.

Our membership fee is $100 for 1 year.  This grants you access to all of our content and experiences.  Content includes the members-only portion of our website, which includes a global directory, archive of online content including Gemflix, a jewelry calendar of events, The Extra newsletter, a forum, among other features.  Our events include private tours, receptions, meet the makers, workshops, lectures, excursions, and other fun meet ups.  The membership fee is renewed on an annual basis.

We use membership funds to maintain and expand our website, built our membership, present thank you gifts to our hosts, and bring new jewelry adventures to you.

A membership expires 12 months after the purchase date.

We charge a reservation fee of between $10-25 for most events. Others that include food & travel may incur additional costs. Instructions for RSVPs will be described in detail on each invitation.

If you are unable to make an event, we will offer you a refund in the form of credit (which can be applied to future events) if you cancel 48 hours before the event.  If it is less than 48 hours, we do not offer refunds.

For most events, our hosts define a headcount limit which we try to respect.  As such, RSVPs are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If an event becomes over-subscribed, we start a wait list.  If you are on the wait list for one event, we give you priority access for the following.

Some events will have the option to purchase tickets for guests.  Others are exclusive to subscribed Gem X members only. Please refer to the instructions on the event invitation.

We frequently limit the number of members who can attend and event to ensure an intimate experience for attendees. We carefully track attendance for each event and if one becomes over-subscribed, we start a wait list. We do our best to ensure that all members have equal access to events. If you are a member and this is a concern for you, please get in touch with us.

If you can no longer attend an event you RSVP for, we ask that you give us at least a day’s notice. We maintain wait lists and wish for all our members to have a fair chance to attend limited headcount events. If you do not show up to an event without giving us notice, we reserve the right to drop you from our membership list.

We are always welcoming of fellow jewelry enthusiasts to share in our journey. If you would like to introduce someone new to Gem X, please ask them to submit a member application and to include your name in the referral.

Yes!  2020 marked our first year of Gem X excursions.  We visited the Tucson Gem Show, and have plans for more travel ahead.
